Review: Rimmel Glam Eyes Mono Eyeshadows

When it comes to affordable drugstore brands, Rimmel ranks near the top for me. Their products and formulas are pretty near faultless with examples such as their Apocalips collection and their Scandal Eyes Kohl Liners which I swear by.

As I'd purchased one of the Glam Eyes Mono Eyeshadows before (Spicy Bronze) as well as a Trio in Modern Blues which I've had no problems with whatsoever, I assumed that all their eyeshadows would be as reliable so when I saw them on Fragrance Direct for 99p, I jumped at the chance to expand my collection. Unfortunately, the shades I bought were a bit lacklustre.

I don't really have any issues with the packaging; yes it's plastic and pretty cheap looking but it's sturdy and allows you to see the product which is lovely with the Rimmel logo embossed in the centre.

As far as the formula goes, I find it can be a bit hit and miss. They're all really soft and easy to blend but tend to vary in pigmentation. 'Spicy Bronze' is highly pigmented but these two aren't overly so though they do have good highlighting potential.

'Gold Rush' looks beautiful in the pan, a pale gold with a shimmer finish. Unfortunately, it doesn't really translate on to the lid. It's really poor as far as pigmentation goes and even when applied liberally (the swatches below have about 5 layers) it's not great. I do find it works better when applied with fingers rather than a brush but the result isn't greatly improved and there's a lot of fall out either way.

'Precious Rose' is similarly beautiful, a delicate soft pink also with a shimmer finish. The formula is exactly same as above but as mentioned before both shades would make wonderful highlighters.

Both eyeshadows look virtually the same when blended so it's completely unnecessary to own the two of them, one is more than suffice. They do offer a pretty highlighting effect that brightens the face and eyes. I choose to wear these on the inside of my eyelid to make my eyes appear bigger and brighter as well as under the eyebrows.

As far as wear time goes, they last for around 8 hours with minor fading and creasing though that may be due to me not wearing a primer on my oily lids and the hot weather!

For 99p, they're not too bad but I definitely don't think I'd spend the full £4.49 on them. Saying that, I do have my eyes on a few other shades like 'Punchy Taupe' and 'Urban Green' and I'm sure they'll end up in my collection soon.

For an overall wash of colour, these aren't what you're looking for but if you want a nice, shimmery highlighter then these would be ideal!

Overall, Rimmel Glam Eyes Eyeshadows have really impressed me though like all brands, there are a few iffy shades. I'd definitely recommend picking one up! Unfortunately neither of these shades are available here on Fragrance Direct (it's worth having a look from time to time as they're always updating their stock) but if you'd like to buy them then they're still in stock in Boots here

Have you tried any Rimmel products? What are your favourites?

  1. I love the colours, but just not on my eyes. They are too pale for me but as you suggested for a highlighter they would be fab!

    1. They're so pretty but not pigmented enough for anyone's eyes really!
